Revealed Surface Under the Earth
Written on August 20th, 2020 by Kun LeeThe team led by Dr.Kim from the University of Mayland has discovered massive structures than ever before with very high density at the boundary between the Earth’s outer core and the lower mantle, as published in June 12, 2020.
These kinds of structures were continuously found in the past, but we still lack in the knowledge of the origin of the materials.
It might be coagulated magma, melt iron from the nucleus or another unpredictable substance. The scientists call these kinds of structures: ULVZ, the Ultralow-velocity zone
UltraLow-Velocity Zone and Seismic Waves as a Tool
ULVZ(from reze2010 of Tistory)
The ULV Zone is located about under 2.9km from the crust. Since it is impossible for humans to reach the such depth, the scientists use earthquakes as a tool to investigate the events happening in the inner earth.
Seismic Waves (from DESY News)
Earthquakes produce seismic waves that can travel thousands of kilometers below the Earth’s surface. These seismic waves are bent or scattered by the density and temperature of the rocks or the resistance of various materials, generating an echo that we can detect.
The echoes arrive to us quicker as they are generated from closer structures, and gets bigger as the structure’s size is bigger.
Using this characteristic, scientists installed seismographs in different locations to measure the travel time and amplitude of these echoes to determine the physical properties of rocks hidden beneath the surface.

The tool allowed to discover the extremely huge surface between the Earth’s outer core and the lower mantle.
However, using seismic waves would not help for the further investigations:
- Had to wait until the next earthquakes
- Only able to investigate a certain area
- Signals may be lost in the inner Earth.
To replace the unpredictable tool, the scientists decided to rectify the sequencer used for investigation in stars as an inner earth explorer.
Earth and ULVZ Result Diagram(from reze2010 of Tistory)
Using the remade sequencer to analyze the 7000s of earthquakes occured in last 30 years, the scientists found 40% of equal echoes, which meant the existence of an enormously large structure that could not have been imagined until now.
In other words, there were a lot more structures in the seismic waves’ paths.
To conclude, the scientists declared that there is about 1000km length of ULVZ in the inner earth.
(the other structures found in the past were about 100km)
Mars and Earth Collision(from CDN)
Moreover, the scientists revealed that the structures discovered is made with the composed of materials from the pre-moon period, meaning that it is a trace of a crash of early Earth and Mars.
However, this analyzing result is still just a hypothesis. It is still unknown as said before. But it is assumed that the scientists will be available to soon find out the mystery of the high-velocity surface with the newly built analyzing method during this event.
